How can students use Ramsey to lose or maintain weight?
Jim Tocci, graduate assistant for strength and conditioning at the University of Georgia, can name at least 20 ways off the top of his head.
“Here, there’s something going on for everyone – even more, if you’re willing to spend a few dollars,” he said.
Free activities, things already paid for by mandatory student fees, include:
- Badminton (Students must bring their own shuttlecock, but racquets can be checked out at the counter.)
- Weight Training and Conditioning (Bring a towel.)
- Basketball (Students must wear tennis shoes while on the court to avoid floor marks.)
- Cardio
- Handball (But remember to bring your own ball, or buy it at the checkout counter.)
- Jogging
- Racquetball (Bring a ball.)
- Soccer
- Squash (Bring a ball.)
- Volleyball
- Walking
Students can take additional classes for a bit more money. Tocci said students can try anyone of the classes using a one time pass, which costs $5. Then, if they like it, they can purchase an All Access Pass for around $130 (52 classes).
These classes include:
· 80s Aerobics (eighties wear optional.)
· Armed & Dangerous (a course on safety.)
· Arms & Glutes
· Cardio Blast
· Cardio Kick
· Cardio Kickboxing
· Kickboxing
· Cheer Dance
· Fab Abs
· Interval Party
· Boxing
· Zumba
You don’t like running or lifting weight? What about Belly Dancing?
Burnett said belly dancing offered more unique health benefits than many other dance-workouts she has done over the years, such as ballet and ballroom. It does this by forcing the dancer to focus on specific stomach muscles, making it the perfect workout for trimming and toning belly fat.
According to Harry Duval, an associate professor at the department of Kinesiology, alternative fitness routines such as belly dancing, yoga and Pilates are excellent in supplementing cardio-based workouts.
“Though they shouldn’t replace walking or jogging, these other types of workouts can be great for strengthening your core muscles,” he said.
Other paid classes Included: Martial Arts, swimming, safety, yoga and Pilates.
